The first thing we ever do when trying a new brush pen or getting ready to letter is warm up. We do a series of strokes to get comfortable with the brush flexibility and ink flow.

We created these worksheets to show you the exact strokes we use when testing a new pen or warming up. We even scanned in our warm-up sheets for sixteen pens so you can see real stroke sizes, textures, and colors side-by-side.

How To Use Your Free Brush Lettering Practice Sheets

Downloading your free brush lettering worksheets is just step one in improving your hand lettering skills. Follow these tips in order to have the most successful brush lettering practice sessions:

  • Print on the right paper. All hand lettering and calligraphy utensils, from markers to gel pens to pointed pens, need to be used with a specific type of paper. Printing your hand lettering practice sheets on the wrong paper can damage your markers. We recommend using Canson Marker Paper, which is semi-transparent and can be used additionally as tracing paper.
  • Focus on building muscle memory. All hand lettering and calligraphy is built on the basic strokes. By building consistency in the angle, height and thickness of every, you'll be able to write much more consistent and refined letters
  • Hold your brush pen the right way. Brush lettering relies on parts of letters being thick (downstrokes) and parts of letters being thin (upstrokes). Holding your pen the wrong way makes this impossible to achieve. Read our guide on how to hold a brush pen or watch the tutorial here:
